Problem:
Among all the consequences of global climate change, permafrost thawing poses the greatest threat to Russia. Given that permafrost soils are spread over 60% of the Russian territory, the methods of monitoring engineering structures subject to deformations in the permafrost zone are of particular relevance.
Solution:
Multipass differential interferometry from radar survey data.
How it works:
• The displacement model is an irregular cloud of measurement points obtained mainly from man-made objects, embankments, dams, structures, railway and highway infrastructure.
• The measurements are made on the basis of a set of remote sensing radar data acquired over a sufficiently long period of time. The first results (displacement model) can be obtained from 25 consecutive surveys acquired over a period of at least 4 months, further the results can be updated on a regular basis at a given interval, e.g. monthly.
• Achievable accuracies: measurement of annual average displacement rates and displacement magnitudes with an accuracy of a few cm to a few mm (depending on the methodology used and data acquisition conditions).
RS data needed:
• Multi-pass radar satellite data.
